Weight reduction and deciding what’s right for you. Firstly, an appointment for an initial consultation is made. This screening is free, and the format helps to determine the appropriate therapy that is right for you.

Weight loss - understanding the problem

Weight gain as a subjective matter can occur for many reasons, and even if there are medical grounds for weight gain, either as a result of genetics, medications or the perception that exists, leading someone to believe they are overweight (a named disorder, Body Dysmorphic Disorder BDD) the removal of ‘bottled-up’ anxiety, and self limiting beliefs offered by Pure Hypno-analysis will help a person to better understand themselves, and the reasons why they have these problems.

At the initial consultation, together we can discuss the finer points of your concerns and decide on type of therapy that is right for you. For a reduction of up to say 10lbs there is a Three Phase Therapy plan in operation, whereas Pure Hypnoanalysis would be recommended if a more significant weight loss was required, this can take between 6 - 12 sessions.

Eating disorders

The two most recognised disorders are termed, Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa and are psychiatric diagnoses characterised by the obsessive need to control weight. Bulimia is a word derived from Latin and Greek languages meaning ‘ravenous hunger’ and Anorexia is derived from a Greek term, meaning ‘lack of desire to eat’. People who suffer from Anorexia use different methods to control their weight for example, purging with laxatives, vomiting, voluntary starvation, and diuretics. Again there is the overwhelming need for control over one’s own body, and there are biological, psychological, neurobiological, and sociological components within these disorders.

There is also the perception that leads someone to believe they are overweight, and this can be caused by what is termed, Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). This can mean despite the fact that to others there appears no noticeable disfigurement or defect, sufferers are reluctant to seek help because they are afraid others will think them vain or they feel too embarrassed to do so. Sadly, research shows there is a significant percentage of the population who suffer undiagnosed with this life shattering disorder.

Emotion and its link with weight Loss or weight Gain

Therefore, when we think of weight gain or weight loss and how each of us perceives it differently - whether or not we are uneasy around food to a lesser or a greater degree (such as Anorexia or Bulimia or BDD) our control over our weight appears to be surrounded by emotions, and our control or lack of it around what we take into our bodies. So, some of us are overweight because our intake of calories is larger than their body requires, whereas others perceive themselves as overweight, but are in reality normal, and acceptable for their age and frame.

So, I have touched upon a few reasons when and why we are likely to put on weight or to loose it, but emotional issues of anxiety, and self-image come high on that list. For instance, think of the physical feelings of emptiness or hollowness we can sometimes feel at times of stress or anxiety - or even later when the event has passed. It’s these types of strong emotions that can trick us into thinking we are hungry when we aren’t. Will power is no match for our imagination, and when we start to think about our favorite foods, we start to salivate and will power takes a back seat, with the need for 'comfort foods' winning out every time.

We need to eat to survive but don’t forget ‘eating habits’ are termed ‘eating habits’ because they are habitual. It is also worthy of note that our eating habits change at various times over a life span, for example:

Food cravings

during pregnancy where the hormone levels fluctuate, and women experience cravings for certain types of food - some having a high calorific content that the person would not normally consume.
when we age, and become less active, we require fewer calories, but because we are used to consuming a certain amount of foods each day we simply continue to do so, and again the pounds pile on. It is at these times when eating habits merely need regulating because the increase in weight has occurred over a long period of time.

Can we control what we eat in a healthy way?

It is achievable - however, the world we live in today is governed by the media and peer pressure. People want to fit in, to look good in (and out) of their clothes and achieve popularity. It is a very high standard that we set for ourselves, and although human kind are goal orientated, once the goal is achieved in maintaining these high standards do we set ourselves up to fail?
