Child therapy in Hampshire

Using hypnosis to treat children in Hampshire

Children respond particularly well to hypnosis, it can help relieve stress and anxiety in children that can all too often lead to symptoms such as bed-wetting (eneuresis’) or nail biting, inability to concentrate, figeting. Children from between the ages of seven or eight, can suffer from symptoms of stress and anxiety in much the same way as adults, but to act and break the cycle before it becomes too entrenched has obvious advantages. Childhood trauma can be helped by utilising hypnosis, visualisation and imagination.

Clinical hypnotherapy for children encourages a lightly relaxed state where the child can use their creative imagination to visualise a 'make-believe journey' where emotion can be alleviated. I use a specific, but non-intrusive kind of therapy for children, termed ‘Blow away’.

For children under seven/eight years of age I think it is better that I teach the child’s parent(s) relaxation skills, and provide them with the necessary tools to help them reach the same conclusion as the older children. For really young children it is important not to cause any more stress or trauma than is necessary, and if they are already exhibiting signs and symptoms it is considered safer for the parents to learn how to apply these skills.

I always ask that where possible both parents attend the session, but I understand that this is not always possible. The sessions proceed with both the child and parent(s) involvement.

Parents and children are asked not to discuss the therapy at all when they leave, because any intellectual intervention may prove detrimental to the therapy. It is best to leave the therapy to do its work unhindered.

I also like parent(s) to take advantage of the free initial consultation where we can meet and discuss their fears and concerns for the child in a safe and confidential environment. It is then possible for you to ask any questions you may have, without your child feeling as if grown ups are ‘talking over their head’.
