What is an anxiety disorder?

An anxiety disorder is a broad base term that covers other fears, such as phobias and panic attacks. However, this explanation is just for chronic anxiety, and bear in mind this kind of anxiety is a chronic, irrational fear with no basis in fact. In other words, there is no ’real’ reason for this kind of extreme reaction.

Main types of anxiety

If I explain, there are two kinds of anxiety, circumstantial and chronic. Circumstantial is when we are exposed to stressful events, circumstances or emotions. To name a few: death of a loved one, divorce, the end of a relationship or illness. When the event, circumstance or emotion has gone, most anxiety conditions with this label will dissolve themselves.

What does anxiety feel like?

Chronic anxiety is the kind of feeling that sits like an ugly toad in the pit of your stomach. It’s there when you go to sleep - dogging your every thought with worry, and angst; its there when you wake up, spoiling and distorting your outlook on the day and on your life. We call this ‘free floating’ anxiety, and Jung (an eminent psychologist of his time) termed it ‘fear spread thinly’.

Chronic anxiety is characterised by symptoms that come and go over a long period of time. These symptoms can ebb and flow during different stages of our lives  (sometimes as early as 4 years old) and, remain as an ongoing theme in our lives. It has a deeply entrenched fear element and, many have the feeling of living in fear whenever the illness re-appears. Some of us may just ‘live‘ with the feelings as we go through life. Other warning signs that can accompany chronic anxiety can be sweating, headaches, palpitations and nausea. Episodes where it reappears can last a few weeks or many years. For some, the symptoms remain constant throughout their life.

How does anxiety start?

Anxiety, and or panic attacks can come about very quickly, you can’t think of any reason why they may occur or there may have originally been a triggering event. Felt to be  part of the response often termed ‘fight or flight’. This is where our system becomes saturated with hormones especially adrenalin which is an evolutionary response to defending us from actual harm or perceived harm. But when it happens for no apparent reason it is intense and frightening, upsetting and uncomfortable.

So these are normal everyday emotions whose real purpose has been short circuited. So that even when there is no immediate danger or fear of harm the hormones flood our system, and make us feel really bad because there is no natural outlet. We can’t run away from something that isn’t there?
