Emetophobia - the fear of being sick
Emetphobia treatment in Hampshire - fear of vomiting
Emetaphobia, one of least commonly talked about phobias
What is Emetaphobia?
If you have Emetaphobia you have an irrational fear of vomiting - It sounds quite simple put like that, doesn’t it? However, in reality it’s far from simple, for the sufferer it’s incapacitating and restrictive in every conceivable way. However, it is a phobia and like other phobias it is the outward projection of an inner anxiety. We know this because the evidence is there when the sufferer says, ’I know its silly, but I have this irrational fear of being sick, or being in the vicinity of someone else being sick’. So, the sufferer knows the fear is irrational, but can do nothing to relieve themselves or their emotions. That’s how we know the fear is inside us, but outside our normal realm of control.
Because the phobia involves the induction of vomiting sufferers have even been misdiagnosed as anorexic or bulimic.
What does it feel like?
Your every waking thought is focused on how to avoid either being sick yourself, or being in the vicinity where someone else is vomiting. Many ordinary everyday events that most people take for granted are of major concern - for example:
- Eating out
- Social drinking
- Inviting your child’s friends round for a party
- Going to a party yourself
- Going to the pictures
- Going on holiday
- Taking a job that involves travelling (sea sickness and travel sickness)
- Family outings
- Having a baby (morning sickness)
- Visiting someone in hospital (germs and viruses that make you sick)
The list seems endless; the way this phobia reaches into your life, and takes away your free will to chose. From what you want to eat and drink, how you care for your family or even the kind of job you would like for yourself, shows that it has no boundaries and will seek to destroy the fabric of your life. Sadly, this still this happens even although you go to extraordinary lengths to prevent yourself from falling sick, or from witnessing someone else becoming sick.
Phobias usually develop over time becoming more and more difficult to manage, and without a doubt they want your full and exclusive attention at all times.
